Texas is a state with mostly private land. We chose to cover only the Desert Bighorn sheep because of the low cost to apply, the trophy quality of the rams that are being produced there, and the demand for Desert Bighorn sheep tags among hunters.
There are four ways to obtain a Desert Bighorn sheep tag in Texas: purchase the auction tag, purchase a landowner tag, apply for the Texas Grand Slam hunt package, or apply for the public draw hunt package.
The auction tag sold for $75,000 in 2014. For more information on the auction tag, go here. Raffle tag draw tickets are $9 per entry plus a $5 online transaction fee. Entries purchased at licensed retailers, by phone, and by mail are $10 each. The deadline to apply in 2014 was October 15th. For more information, go to here or call us at Huntin’ Fool® and we’ll take care of it for you.
Landowner tags are also available, but Texas Parks and Wildlife Department does not release the contact information at this time.
The public draw is for a fully-guided hunt by Texas Parks and Wildlife personnel for 5 days, decided upon between the hunter and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The cost to apply is $10, and you are only allowed to submit one application per person. Bonus points will be awarded to unsuccessful applicants. The deadline to apply is January 12, 2015. You must be 17 years old to apply for this sheep hunt. Applications are only accepted online here. There will be no more paper applications accepted. No permit fee is required for successful applicants. Hunter success has been 100% the last few years. Draw odds have been around 1 in 2,600 the last couple of years.

Texas is a “must apply for” state for hunters wanting to take a Desert Bighorn sheep. The odds are extremely tough, but someone has to draw, and it’s cheap! Apply, Apply, Apply!
