Huntin' Fool's Newest Consultant

By David Virostko, April 2014

Don’t let someone who gave up on their dreams, talk you out of going after yours. Throughout most of my adult life, I have relied on these words often for strength and encouragement. As a result, I have been able to achieve more than I truly ever thought possible; whether in the field, in the office, or at home with my family, I attribute many of the positives in my life toward the fact that I never gave up on what I felt was most important.

So where am I going with all of this? Well, I believe that all hunters possess a relentless passion for success, as well as an undying determination to achieve what they set out to accomplish. In today’s world, these are extremely valuable and rare traits; however, I firmly believe they are also what bond us together as hunters. Simply put, I am proud to consider myself an equal to all of you in the hunting community — husbands, fathers, wives, mothers, brothers, and sisters who share the same determined attitude on and off the field.

As one of the newest consultants to join the Huntin’ Fool® team, I wanted to take this time and not only introduce myself, but also give you some insight as to who I am, what I value most, and ultimately, the asset I can be to you, the Huntin’ Fool® member. My name is David Virostko, and I live in Kanab, Utah. For over 15 years, I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Taleana. Together we are raising two young boys — Brogun, age 6 1/2 (and that’s a big half, just ask him), and Kanon, age 5. Both my wife and I were raised in Richfield, Utah, and both of us have always loved the outdoors, as well as our hunting heritage. From deer, elk, coyote, and turkey hunting to fishing, trapping, and shed season, our family has always kept the fabric of the outdoors woven into our lives. Although I have been actively engaged in my own hunting pursuits, the concept took on a whole new meaning with the birth of our children. Many of you can relate when I say that I have never been the same since.

For as long as I can remember, I have been involved in the hunting industry. For the past 11 years, I have owned and operated my own guiding and outfitting business where my team of guides and I have specialized in big game hunting in southern Utah and northern Arizona. Each year I am humbled by the results of our hard work and dedication; the feeling of helping others achieve their own hunting goals is a near addiction, and I am proud of the reputation we have somehow managed to build. In addition to my outfitting duties, over the years I have also found a fair amount of time to expand my own personal hunting, having put boots on the ground in Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

Prior to accepting this job with Huntin’ Fool®, I worked with Ryan Hatch and MuleyCrazy Magazine. As a result, over the past decade I have been fortunate enough to witness some of the biggest bucks that have ever roamed the hills, as well as help put many of them on the ground. On top of my day-to-day duties with the publication, I was a key component in running a very successful application service. During this time my networking among state wildlife biologists, guides and outfitters, and hardcore and casual hunters alike expanded by leaps and bounds. The result is that I now possess an extensive knowledge of not only how to get tags drawn or who to hunt with, but also the hunting world as a whole. My time with MuleyCrazy was, and always will be, some of the best years of my life, and I am truly grateful for the doors it opened for me.

Although I may be one of the newest additions to the Huntin’ Fool® team, make no mistake about it, I have been a member, a student, and a fan of this great publication for a very long time. Like many of you, I have long viewed Huntin’ Fool® as the premier source for up-to-date and accurate information on big game hunting. Nowhere else can a hunter find draw odds, harvest reports, biological research, and all other critical information directed solely at helping them become more successful in the field. Huntin’ Fool® is “the” source for all your hunting needs, and I cannot express in words how excited I am to be a part of it all. Although my official title is “hunting consultant,” due to my past history in the hunting publication and marketing worlds, as well as the application service arena, I am ready to bring all I can to the table to better serve the Huntin’ Fool® members.

As many of you know, the ownership of Huntin’ Fool® recently exchanged hands. Last year I had a chance to spend some time in the field with one of the new owners, John Makoff. From the first 15 minutes, I could tell that John took everything very seriously, but I also noticed something different about him; I saw unselfishness and humbleness, two characteristics which, sadly but truly, are lacking in the hunting industry. As I got to know John and his partners a little more, I felt myself become more and more excited at the opportunity to work alongside a team that truly holds the interests of its members above all others. I can say it until I am blue in the face, but as time rolls along, you will see that with the new ownership and new staff changes of Huntin’ Fool®, the objectives and goals will be more and more focused on you, the greater hunter.

While a resume was the last thing I wanted this article to come across as, I am glad the initial announcement is over so that I can get to work on supplying some fun, informative, and helpful articles in the future. I am proud to consider myself among peers who hold the same high value and core characteristics, be it through you the member or the new team I now call colleagues. After all, as Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” I look forward to carrying this same attitude forward with Huntin’ Fool®.
